Aroma a Distancia, distant scent ... perfume, love, and remembrance. This composition happens in between two worlds. I wrote it in times of change, times of personal relocation where many of my influences, sounds, tastes and aromas where deeply in my thoughts. My first 20 years of life were in Venezuela, surrounded by music and family. Then I spent more than 20 years living in the United States, making new friends, sharing with great musicians that I like to call my extended family.

This piece starts with a slow pace theme in the style of “tonada” from Venezuelan plains. This same melody also has hints of Afro-Cuban “dianas”, which are melodies used in rumba styles. All of these melodies are interrupted by flamenco (my new home) ... I use a very energetic and up-tempo style called “bulería” ... Flamenco harmonies and intricate rhythms bring novelty to my “new life”, however the aroma, the remembrance of my past is what makes me who I am today. After all, it often happens that whenever I’m in Venezuela, I miss Madrid or New York, or if I’m in Boston I miss Caracas. All of these different scents, aromas and tastes are exposed in “Aroma a Distancia. - Gonzalo Grau
