about

ArpRec1 is a piece I built using generative techniques, using Ableton and MaxMSP. I've been enjoying mirroring the process I use in my electronic music, particular with modular synthesizers, in my notated music. This piece was the first attempt at this process. It differs from what is commonly understood to be generative music in that the piece is performed live at a midi controller as opposed to a closed system, excluding the performer. This way you're using your intuition and the generative nature of the process is, in the best case, an extension of what I'm performing. Each movement is a live take, where the string quartet is performed live using this system which is then edited. The phrases and gestures are arrived at by "reconciling" streams of arpeggiators and modulating sources, hence the title ArpRec1. The music Brooklyn Rider performs is the notated result of this process. I had been diving into a lot of Iannis Xenakis' work and thinking about Fred Lerdahl's book Generative Theory of Tonal Music as well as his music.
